winter months are upon us, with bright sunshine to lift our spirits
often followed by great gusting winds littering leaves and branches
everywhere. January days can pass as dreary and dark, so bright days
are wonderful and then the need to be outside exploring the garden,
looking for signs of Snowdrops is a real joy. The bare outlines and
patches of green are our familiar winterlandscape, the small changes we
see are so different to the abundance of flowers & smell in summer,
but this is the specialness of the plants we have around us in winter.
Today I see clumps of G. e Mrs. McNamara all standing proudly, Aconites
scattering yellow dots across the soil. All around plants are stirring
into growth slowly and gradually little sprouts of green are appearing
it is an exciting time for all.
As usual our annual ‘Snowdrop Saturday will be held this year on
17 February 2018. On this day visitors are able to view the Snowdrop
Collection within the Garden, see examples of Snowdrops in a Pot
and Photograph Exhibition, meet & talk to Snowdrop Gardeners, enjoy
a welcome cup of tea or mug of St. Michael’s Soup and buy a
Snowdrop or two! There will be many Snowdrop occasions such as
‘Walks’ and ‘Garden Opens’ throughout the
country so see what is on in your local area. Locally visit Welford
Park in Berkshire, here Galanthus nivalis ‘en mass,’ in
spendour, they are a wonderful sight, the grounds are open through out
February ( check the website.)
This year Welford Park will have it’s annual MacMillan Plant Fair
over a two day period -Wed 28 Feb & Thurs. 1 Mar with many
